Very few cities in the world can offer visitors such an abundance of natural beauty as Rio de Janeiro. The splendor of its coastline and the green of its mountains and forests have been preserved, despite urban growth, and the combination of the blue sky and sea and the green of the forests is incomparable.

One of the most famous sights of Rio is the sinuous design of the Copacabana sidewalk bordering the beach of shining white sand, leading down to the gentle surf of the Atlantic ocean. This is the perfect place for walks in the early morning, before starting the agenda of congresses, conventions or fairs, or in the late afternoon, with the sky reflecting the warm red colors of sunset. This natural beauty is not limited to the "Princess of the Sea", as Copacabana is known to locals, it extends for 90 kilometers through Ipanema and Leblon past São Conrado to Barra.
From the statue of Christ, on top of the Corcovado mountain, which is covered in dense Atlantic forest, there is a spectacular view of the ocean, the forest and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, a heart-shaped piece of water surrounded by the boroughs of the South Zone. From below, especially from the edge of the lagoon, the impressive rock escarpment is the perfect altar for the image of Christ resplendent on the crest.

The Botanical Gardens, apart from being an excellent place for strolling in the fresh air, is a lesson in world botany, with its collection of species that was started in the 19th century. For more serious walkers or trekkers there are marked trails in the Tijuca forest, which are also suitable for mountain biking. It is quite common to come across the local fauna, such as marmoset monkeys leaping from branch to branch, or the crowds of humming birds that gather around the Floresta restaurant.
There are various tour operators that offer tours of the forest and neighboring areas, along the mountain roads with many points commanding fascinating views, such as the Vista Chinesa and the Dona Marta.

Out beyond Barra the vegetation is almost virgin. If you have time visit Prainha and Grumari beaches - much loved by the surfers. The vegetation is protected and no building is permitted. Nearby is the estate where the famous landscape artist Burle Marx lived. This is open to visitors, and is perfect for an ecological/photographic safari. It contains plants from all over the world, though the emphasis is on wonderful examples of Brazilian flora.

Helicopter flights or tandem flights on hang-gliders or para-gliders are another way to enjoy the generous natural beauty of the city. Such beauty that convention centers are obliged to install curtains to avoid competition from the views from the windows. However there is always a time and a place for everything.
