In 1912, the inauguration of an “aerial pathway” in Rio de Janeiro added a venture to the tourist map of Brazil that would become world famous – the SUGAR LOAF CABLE CAR. Today the sight of the “bondinhos” constantly moving back and forth, has become part of the Rio landscape.

The Sugar Loaf mountain – Rio’s registered trade mark – is a rock almost totally bare of vegetation. It is a single block of granite, shaped by pressure and temperature and is more than 600 million years old. The view from the top is a 360º scene of amazing landscapes, such as the beaches of Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, Flamengo, Leblon; Pedra da Gávea, the Tijuca massif and the Corcovado, with the image of Christ the Redeemer; and below it Guanabara Bay, Botafogo beach; the city center; Santos Dumont Airport; Governor’s Island; Niteroi; the Rio-Niteroi bridge; and in the far distance the Atlantic Mountain Range (Serra do Mar), and the “Finger of God” peak.
